Jim: Ha! You’re right about that. The most common one is the “Korean age system.” A person is one year old when he is born and then becomes a year older on the first day of each new year.

Jim: Yes. It is similar to the Chinese age. For the Chinese, they are one year old at birth, and another year is added to their age on Lunar New Year’s Day.

Jim: We also have the “counting age.” A person’s age is counted from zero at birth and a year is added on January 1. The method is mainly used to count the legal age for drinking alcohol and smoking.

Jim: Yes, so when we talk about a person’s age, it gets confusing sometimes. That’s why the government has decided to stop the traditional age-counting system and only follow the international system.
