Some politicians have also expressed their strong disapproval. Bucheon mayor Jang Deog-cheon, a member of the Democratic Party said that Ryu “had better focus on getting the work done rather than on marketing herself.”

In response to the criticism against her, Ryu said the reason she had worn the dress was to “shatter the tradition” of lawmakers wearing suits. “The authority of the National Assembly is not built upon those suits,” she added.

Meanwhile, Ryu’s party and some members of the ruling Democratic Party said they were in solidarity with her. “We cannot agree at all with the voice that paints a female politician as lacking qualification by evaluating her look and image rather than her legislative work,” said the Justice Party in a statement.
