South Korea reported its first case of African swine fever (ASF) on September 17th, after several pig carcasses in Gyeonggi Province were found to carry the virus, a local official said.
南韓在9月17日通報第一例非洲豬瘟案例，當地官員表示，京畿道有些許豬隻被發現帶有病毒。

Meanwhile, the Japanese government reported an outbreak of common swine fever in Saitama Prefecture north of Tokyo. Both countries have taken the necessary measures to check the spread of the diseases.

According to the South Korean ministry of agriculture, the infected animals came from a pig farm in Paju, a city close to the border with North Korea. A link to the northern neighbors is suspected, as the outbreak is occurring less than four months after the highly contagious disease hit North Korea in late May.

An investigation is now underway to determine the route through which the fatal virus entered the country. Meanwhile, officials have issued the highest level of alert and, as a preventative measure, ordered the culling of almost 4,000 pigs at three farms by the end of the day on September 17th.
