The former chairman of Eva Airways has officially launched a new airline targeting luxury travel, with operation of passenger flights scheduled to begin in 2020.

Chang Kuo-wei, who is the son of Eva Airways founder Chang Yung-fa, is launching StarLux two years after he was ousted from his former position as chairman of EVA Airways by his three older brothers.

In an official press conference on Tuesday, the younger Chang said that StarLux will seek to differentiate itself from its competitors by attracting high-end travelers and will prioritize setting up regular flights to Japan.

The airline also expects to establish routes to Southeast Asia, with Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia as its first choices.

“The Taiwanese market itself is too small, so we need to focus on the transit sector in order to play big,” Chang told reporters.

The airline expects to operate short-haul flights for two to three years, after which it will consider launching long-haul flights to the west coast of the United States.

When asked by reporters, Chang denied rumors that he had set up the airline as revenge against the coup which forced him out of Eva, saying that Starlux would be open to working closely with other Taiwanese airlines.
回答記者提問時，張國煒否認成立星宇是為了被踢出長榮復仇的傳言，他表示星宇也希望和台灣其他航空公司攜手合作。
