A glacier in the Italian Alps is turning pink due to snow algae, said Biagio Di Mauro, an Italian researcher at the country’s National Research Council.

According to Di Mauro, who also studied the snow algae at a glacier in Switzerland, the plant, officially named Ancylonema nordenskioeldii, is not hazardous.

It is a natural phenomenon that happens in spring and summer at middle latitudes and also at the poles.

Furthermore, the pink snow that appeared on the colored areas of the Presena glacier is possibly caused by the same algae that are also spotted in southwestern Greenland, the Andes and the Himalayas.

In Greenland, the algae thrive in the Dark Zone where the ice is melting the most. Normally, ice reflects at least 80% of the sun’s radiation back into the atmosphere.

However, as the algae photosynthesize, they produce some sort of natural protection against the sunlight, darkening the area where they grow.

The colored ice then will absorb more solar radiation and melt faster, granting the algae underneath better access to air and water which they need to bloom even more. The interaction eventually forms a vicious cycle.

“Everything that darkens the snow causes it to melt because it accelerates the absorption of radiation,” pointed out Di Mauro.

“We are trying to quantify the effect of other phenomena besides the human one on the overheating of the Earth,” Di Mauro added.
