Danish shipping firm Maersk, which is one of the major players in global container shipping, has signaled a slowdown in both transportation and logistics demand.

Despite rising rates of ocean freight that contributed to the extremely successful quarter for Maersk, the company’s CEO Soren Skou has noted that declining earnings are expected over the coming months.

He also noted that other “dark clouds on the horizon,” including the war in Ukraine, the European energy crisis, high inflation and “a looming global recession,” will lower consumer purchasing power and, in turn, demand for shipping.

Maersk, widely considered to be a barometer of international trade, has predicted that worldwide container demand will “contract between 2% and 4% in 2022.”
