There’s a crisis happening in Turkey right now, and it’s caused by sea snot.

For months, this thick yellow mucus has covered the Sea of Marmara in the Mediterranean, and it’s hurting both the sea life and Turkey’s economy.

Turkey is working hard to get rid of it, but the large amounts of mucus floating at the surface is a sign of much larger issues in the sea.

Michael Stachowitsch, a marine ecologist at the University of Vienna, explains that mucus is not an unnatural phenomenon.
marine(adj.)海洋相關的unnatural(adj.)
“There’s no marine organism that doesn’t produce mucus, from the lowly snail to the slimy fish,” he said.

organism(n.)有機體;生物lowly(adj.)低等的slimy(adj.)
However, this much mucus is not normal in healthy waters. The cause of the mucus crisis is phytoplankton.
normal(adj.)普通的;平常的cause(n.)原因
These phytoplankton produce excess mucus when they receive imbalanced nutrients from fertilizer runoff or untreated wastewater.

Turkey’s fishing and tourism industries are taking a big hit from the crisis as well because fishing boats cannot go to sea and tourists prefer to stay far away from the mess.
