Lee Jae-yong, the only son of the incapacitated Chairman Lee Kun-hee and grandson of founder Lee Byung-chull, is vice-chairman of Samsung Electronics and was put in jail for five years in 2017 for bribery, embezzlement and other offenses in connection with the scandal that brought down South Korean president Park Geun-hye.

Speaking at a briefing at company headquarters, Lee admitted to personal misconduct in the past. “Our technology and products are being hailed as first-class, but the public gaze towards Samsung still remains harsh,” Lee said. “This is my fault. I apologize.”

Lee also said he would not hand down leadership of the company to his children. “I give my word here, today, that from now on, there will be no more controversy regarding succession. There will absolutely be no violation of the law,” Lee said.
