A Russian opposition activist has been sent to serve at a remote Arctic base in a political move with echoes of the Tsarist and Stalinist eras.

The Russian military insisted that Shaveddinov had been dodging the draft. Maksim Loktev, head of the Moscow military enlistment office, told the Russian state-news agency TASS that Shaveddinov “evaded conscription service for a long time and his enlistment is legal.”
