Residents forced to evacuate two tilting buildings in New Taipei City’s Sanchong District on Tuesday, February 27 were given the green light by authorities to return home two days later.

According to CNA English News, 83 residents were evacuated to hotels for two nights after work at a nearby construction site on Fulong Road caused their buildings to tilt.

Speaking after the incident, the head of the New Taipei City Professional Civil Engineers Association, Lai Chien-hung, said that the damage was likely the result of underground drilling that released groundwater from under the two buildings.

Following the incident, the civil engineers association inspected the buildings and found them to be safe for residents to return, even though the tilting of the buildings and the damage, including floors being uneven and doors no longer closing correctly, were “apparent to the naked eye.”
