Academics in France have revealed what they billed to be the first home in the world to be constructed using a 3D printer.

Yhnova, designed by researchers at the University of Nantes, was the first site for human habitation to be built using 3D printing technology, according to Reuters’ report.

It took the BatiPrint3D printer around 18 days to complete creating hollow walls which it then filled with a special polymer.

Benoit Furet, a participating professor in the project, thinks the technology could transform the way human beings build.

“It’s a solution and a constructive principle that is interesting because we create the house directly on site and thanks to the robot, we are able to create walls with complex shapes,” he explained.

The 5 room “smart house” takes up a total area of 95 square meters and features a monitoring system tracking air quality, humidity, temperature, as well as analyzing the thermal conditions of the building, which will help save energy costs.

Yhnova will be allocated to local families that qualify for social housing, with the first tenants set to move in in June, authorities said.
