On Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its dismay at the Guardian, after the UK paper alleged that government officials in the Republic of Nauru are paid a monthly stipend in exchange for their continued support for Taiwan.

Last week, the Guardian reported that Taiwan pays a secret monthly allowance of US$5,000 (NT$154,000) to Nauru’s government ministers and US$2,500 (NT$77,000) to other high-ranking politicians in order to maintain relations between the two countries.
