According to the country’s state media, more than 250 millimeters of precipitation fell in some areas of the UAE in less than a day, representing the “largest ever” rainfall during “a 24-hour period since records started in 1949.”

Because the UAE is not accustomed to torrential rainfall events, the storm caused massive flooding and destruction, especially in the country’s most populous city — Dubai.

Without suitable drainage, the sheer amount of rain that Dubai received in such a short time — “a year’s worth” in some estimates — caused flash flooding on April 16 that turned roads into rivers and “inundated homes and businesses.”

In addition to wreaking havoc in urban areas, the storm completely crippled Dubai International Airport, which was recently named “the second-busiest airport in the world.”

As the airport’s tarmac became flooded, major airline Emirates “suspended check-in for passengers departing Dubai” for around 16 hours, while budget airline Flydubai canceled many of its flights.

While some have blamed the storm on the UAE’s practice of cloud seeding, which artificially increases rainfall by implanting chemicals into clouds, experts have disagreed.

According to Esraa Alnaqbi of the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology, the thunderstorm was the result of an “abnormal phenomenon” of low-pressure systems and warm air close to the ground that was likely exacerbated by climate change.
