Kaseya is a company that sells software to IT outsourcing companies, which in turn provide services to their clients. The cyberattack affected 800 to 1,500 small to medium-sized companies – including supermarkets in Sweden and schools in New Zealand.

REvil, the Russian-speaking hacking gang, has claimed responsibility for the massive ransomware attack. The hackers have demanded $70 million paid in bitcoin in exchange for a key that decrypts the files of all victims. The criminal group extorted $11 million from the world’s largest meat processor JBS at the end of May.

Kaseya said it was working with the FBI, which was investigating in coordination with the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

The White House said that the ransomware attack showed the need for companies and government agencies to improve their cybersecurity. President Joe Biden said that he ordered a “deep dive” by US intelligence into the attack and that the US would respond if it determines the Kremlin is involved.
