Four members of the punk protest group Pussy Riot, who interrupted the World Cup final between France and Croatia by running onto the pitch, have been sentenced to 15 days in jail for “violation of spectators’ rights”.

The group said that it was a protest against human rights abuses in Russia.

Meanwhile, Olga Kurachyova, one of the protestors, said their stunt was intended to promote freedom of speech and condemn the policies of FIFA, football’s global governing body.

“It is a pity that we disrupted the sportsmen,” Kurachyova said. “FIFA is involved in unfair games unfortunately. FIFA is a friend of heads of states who carry out repression and violate human rights.”
