Eva and Wade are discussing the merits and demerits of overdraft protection.
merit(n.)優點;價值demerit(n.)
Eva: Since those with overdraft protection tend to pay more fees than those without the coverage, why don’t they just opt out of the service?
coverage(n.)(保險、內容、服務等的)涵蓋範圍opt out of sth. 退出opt into sth.=opt in for sth.=加入、參與…
Wade: Because it does have its pros.
Eva: Like what?
Wade: Your transaction will still clear even if you don’t have enough money in your bank account. It can provide access to funds in times of emergency.
transaction(n.)交易access(n.)
Eva: This could save us from embarrassment in cases of having our cards declined.
save one from embarrassment=讓某人免於尷尬decline(v.)
Wade: The downside of overdraft protection is that you may end up paying more for whatever fees your bank charges.
downside(n.)
Eva: Would they charge more than the purchase I actually make?
Wade: It’s possible. If one runs up multiple overdraft fees and ends up with a negative bank account balance, the bank will eventually close the account.
end up with sth.=落得…的下場negative(adj.)負值的
Eva: What would happen then?
Wade: Once your account is closed, it will be much harder to get another account at a different bank.
