Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced that they will step back as “senior” members of the British royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex explained their groundbreaking decision in a statement posted on their website and Instagram.

“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” they wrote.

The couple also said they plan to divide their time between the United Kingdom and North America.

The couple’s move comes amid speculations that they have increasingly struggled with the pressures of royal life and family rifts.

Buckingham Palace responded shortly to the couple’s decision with its own terse statement. “We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through,” the palace said.
