A priest at St. Gregory Church in Phoenix, Arizona, resigned earlier this month after the Catholic diocese found that he had used incorrect wording on a component of the sacrament.

Last year, the Rev. Andres Arango was leading a baptism at the church when some people in the pews heard a slight variation in the ceremony. “We baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” Father Arango said, his voice echoing in the church as he poured the holy water.

Arango should have said “I baptize” on behalf of Jesus, instead of “we baptize,” referring to the wider church community, Bishop Thomas Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix said in a statement to the diocese after consulting with the Vatican.

Father Arango submitted his resignation earlier this month. He apologized in a statement, saying that he was saddened to learn that he had performed invalid baptisms throughout his ministry as a priest. “I deeply regret my error and how this has affected numerous people in your parish and elsewhere.”

Arango’s former congregation members came to his defense with a petition, seeking his reinstatement. Some said that it was a pity that the priest had to leave their parish over a technicality.
