President Tsai Ing-wen urged opposing factions in Taiwan to reconcile their differences after Mayor of Kaohsiung Han Kuo-yu lost an acrimonious recall vote on Saturday, and his KMT ally, Kaohsiung City Council Speaker Hsu Kun-yuan, died on the same day after falling from his residence.

More than 900,000 people voted for Han to be recalled, well above the 570,000 required to unseat him, against around 25,000 who voted against the recall, according to the city’s election commission.

Afterwards, Kaohsiung City Council Speaker Hsu Kun-yuan fell to his death from his 17th-floor apartment.

It is still unclear whether the speaker’s death was related to the recall vote against Han, as police are still investigating the incident.
