Homo floresiensis is an early human species that is believed to have lived around 100,000 to 60,000 years ago on the island and could have made it to the present day thanks to its relative isolation.

The species, Homo floresiensis, was named after the Indonesian island where it was discovered. It later earned its “Hobbit” nickname as the size of its excavated bone remains indicated it only stood at around 106 centimeters tall.

Following its discovery in 2003, the species has been the subject of peer-reviewed research. It was concluded that Homo floresiensis only had similarities with Homo habilis while links to Homo erectus were refuted.
