Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla sold $5.6 million worth of stock on the same day it announced positive early results on its experimental COVID-19 vaccine.
Shares of Pfizer rose as much as 15% on November 9 after the company and its partner BioNTech said its vaccine was more than 90% effective in preventing Covid-19 based on interim trial results.

Such a trading plan is designed to absolve executives from insider trading accusations. It is customary for public-company executives to receive a considerable share of their compensation in the form of stock, and the vast majority periodically sell part of their shareholdings.

Bourla is not the first pharmaceutical or biotech executive to cash in on his company’s rising stock during the pandemic. The top five executives at the biotech company Moderna have sold more than $80 million in stock this year as the company’s stock soared on hopes of its Covid-19 vaccine.
