Remember the self-lacing sneakers in the “Back to the Future” film franchise in the 80s? Now Nike has made the movie magic a reality by introducing its first self-lacing smart basketball shoes, the Adapt BB.

The Nike Adapt BB shoes automatically loosen or tighten when a wearer steps into them. Then the wearer can adjust to find the perfect fit via physical buttons on the shoe or through a smartphone app.

Nike VP creative director of innovation, Eric Avar, said that the brand chose basketball as the first sport for the Adapt BB because basketball players require higher performance and functionality from their shoes with all their fast cuts and constant sprints.

The Nike Adapt BB will go on sale on February 16, 2019 for $350 a pair. Nike is expecting the technology to become available to other sports and lifestyle products, although no timelines have been set for those.
