With only an orangutan as a companion, Benga shifted between silently shooting a bow and arrow, and angrily mimicking the crowd’s mocking during his 20-day showcase.

Not surprisingly, such disgraceful treatment soon evoked widespread concern over basic human rights, especially from the Christian minister who finally ended Benga’s confinement.

However, the Wildlife Conservation Society, operator of the Bronx Zoo, stonewalled for many years even in the face of strong moral questioning. When the WCS finally realized the snowball effect, it came up with several flawed responses, stating that Benga was actually an employee of the zoo and that he was friends with Verner.
