A pneumonia outbreak that has struck more than 50 people in the Chinese city of Wuhan may be due to a newly emerging member of the same family of viruses as the deadly severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

A new strain of coronavirus has been found in some of the pneumonia patients in the central city of Wuhan in Hubei province, and it has been preliminarily identified as the pathogen for the outbreak, although the WHO said more information is needed to confirm the type of pathogen causing the infections.

There are currently six known types of coronavirus; four of them cause minor illnesses such as the common cold, while the other two could be lethal, leading either to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

The UN health agency said it is not ruling out the possibility that the pathogen that caused the cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan could be a novel coronavirus, since testing by Chinese authorities has eliminated the SARS and MERS coronaviruses as possible causes.

According to the WHO, questions remain about the source of the virus and how it is transmitted.
Several of the people who fell ill had worked at a seafood market in Wuhan’s suburbs.
The market also sold other live animals, including birds, rabbits and snakes, raising concerns that the virus might have been transmitted to humans from animals.
