Scientists in Taiwan have made an amazing discovery – a new species of clam named Meterix taiwanica – while attempting to save the local clam population in the Tamsui River.

After conducting DNA testing, the clams were found to be different from both Oriental clams as well as another species of clam typically found around China.

In fact, the institute noted that no Oriental clams were found in the Tamsui River, suggesting that the species was probably not able to adapt and likely died out.

Researchers believe that this new species may also live in the waters around southern China, in addition to Taiwan.

The institute’s research was published in the Molluscan Research journal in March, introducing the world to Taiwan’s newest shellfish — Meterix taiwanica.
