Taiwan’s new national electronic identification card (eID) may not include the Republic of China (ROC) flag nor the gender of the holder.

The head of the National Development Council, Chen Mei-ling, said on Monday the new eID cards will only show the cardholder’s name, ID number and photo, and will no longer display the gender of the cardholder.

Chen also said the new card will not feature the ROC flag. This decision has been viewed by many as an attempt by the government to dissociate Taiwan from the Republic of China.

In response, the Minister of the Interior Hsu Kuo-yung said that many other countries, including China, Japan, and Germany, do not have national flags on their ID cards, stressing that removing the flag design is not political in any sense.

The Interior Minister said there will be cross-party negotiations before the final version of the new ID card is decided, and no decisions have yet been made.
