The Games opened in the shadow of COVID-19, with Tokyo still under a state of emergency and many Japanese strongly opposed to holding the event, but perseverance in the face of the pandemic quickly emerged as a theme in the first moments of the ceremony.

The biggest spectacle of the ceremony was 1,824 drones lighting up the sky above the Olympic Stadium.
