Mumbai, India tops global rankings for expatriate salaries, according to the latest HSBC Expat Explorer survey.

Foreigners working in India’s most populous city reported average annual earnings of $217,165, more than twice the global average of $99,903.

“Mumbai has the highest percentage of expats sent by their employer — these expats often benefit from relocation packages which goes some way in explaining the higher salaries expats enjoy in the city,” said Dean Blackburn, who leads the survey.

San Francisco emerged as the second most lucrative city for expatriates. Foreigners working in the Golden City reported an average salary of $207,227.

Among the top 10 highest-paying cities for expats, three other Asian cities are listed, with Shanghai coming fourth with an average expat yearly income of $202,211, Jakarta eighth at $152,589 and Hong Kong ninth at $148,410.

These findings are based on feedback from 27,587 expats around the world. A total of 52 cities reached the minimum sample threshold of 90 expat respondents.
