The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) plans to propose a new energy policy within two months, following a referendum in which 59% of voters supported overturning its “nuclear-free homeland policy” of phasing out nuclear power by 2025.
台灣日前舉行公投，59％的選民支持推翻在2025年前逐步淘汰核電的「非核家園政策」，順應公投結果，經濟部計劃在兩個月內提出新的能源政策。

Minister of Economic Affairs Shen Jung-chin said on Wednesday that the new energy policy will focus on energy conservation as well as the use of green power and nuclear power.

The MOEA will ask Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) to evaluate the possibility of extending the service life of existing power plants.

If the MOEA decides to continue the operations of the second and third nuclear power plants, the Atomic Energy Council (AEC) will review the proposals in accordance with the law.

The referendum has forced the government to reconsider its energy policy and even postpone the deadline to terminate nuclear power generation.

The New Taipei City Government said that the second nuclear power plant is on its way to be fully decommissioned by 2023 and that the application deadline for extending its service life is already overdue.

For New Taipei City, the main concern now is that Taipower must clearly state where the final disposal site for nuclear waste is to be located, and when the nuclear waste that is temporarily stored in the city will be moved out, said New Taipei City Government’s spokesperson Chang Chi-Chiang.
