Tech giant Microsoft and Viasat, a satellite communications leader and innovator, announced a new partnership on December 14 to provide internet access to 10 million people in underserved communities around the world.

The pairing with Viasat is the first of its kind for Microsoft’s Airband Initiative, which has a current goal of delivering internet connection to 250 million people worldwide by the end of 2025.

By partnering with Viasat, Microsoft hopes to be able to overcome the lack of critical infrastructure in underserved communities and rural areas around the world by utilizing satellites to provide internet connectivity to improve residents’ online access to healthcare and educational resources as well as business and communication opportunities.
