Meta has created an AI system that removes the language barrier between Hokkien and English as it can translate these two languages in real time.

To overcome these obstacles, Meta researchers used text written in Mandarin as an intermediary between English and Hokkien when training the system.

Lee Hung-yi, an associate professor of electrical engineering at National Taiwan University who contributed to the project, said that Taiwanese local television dramas played a significant role in perfecting Meta’s translation tool.

He added that nearly 1,500 hours of drama footage were used to train the AI model as the dramas come with subtitles, allowing the system to pair the information accordingly.
