“When we brought a same-sex bill to the legislature, the office phone wouldn’t stop ringing. From early in the morning till late at night, anti-LBGT groups kept calling to protest and revile us.”

Yu Mei-nu is no stranger to this kind of situation. Thirty years of advocacy for women’s rights have dealt her more than her fair share of conservative backlash.

“During the period of martial law, women could only talk about duty; we didn’t get to talk about rights.” At the time, Yu Mei-nu believed that we are all equal before the law, but soon discovered that “equality” did not apply to women.

When feminism finally gained traction in Taiwan, Yu became a passionate and dedicated supporter. She began publishing essays and speaking out publicly for legal reform that would draw society’s attention to the problems faced by women and minorities.

Yu Mei-nu feels that the previous generation has an important role to play. “I encourage parents with children who are queer and already came out to speak up and show that love and acceptance resolves conflicts and heals wounds.”

Yu believes wars are won with kindness, and that tolerance is key to winning this particular battle. Only then will the people in the dark corners finally be able to live a “normal” life. What she wants to see is a society with no pretense, people honest with themselves and with others and all living in peaceful tolerance.
