Meet Yu Mei-nu, Taiwan’s Unstoppable Civil Rights Advocate
“When we brought a same-sex bill to the legislature, the office phone wouldn’t stop ringing. From early in the morning till late at night, anti-LBGT groups kept calling to protest and revile us.”
legislature(n.)立法院=the Legislative Yuanrevile(v.)
Yu Mei-nu is no stranger to this kind of situation. Thirty years of advocacy for women’s rights have dealt her more than her fair share of conservative backlash.

Now, faced with the latest melodrama by anti-LGBT groups, she already knows too well how things will turn out, and she isn’t fazed, not in the slightest.

“During the period of martial law, women could only talk about duty; we didn’t get to talk about rights.” At the time, Yu Mei-nu believed that we are all equal before the law, but soon discovered that “equality” did not apply to women.
the period of martial law戒嚴時期apply to~適用於…
When feminism finally gained traction in Taiwan, Yu became a passionate and dedicated supporter. She began publishing essays and speaking out publicly for legal reform that would draw society’s attention to the problems faced by women and minorities.
gain traction獲得支持dedicated(adj.)投入的minority(n.)
“I knew exactly what I was fighting for, even though I was faced with all kinds of criticism and attacks. I wasn’t going to let anything sway me; nothing would stand in my way. I just persevered and carried on.”

But what can Taiwanese society do to make a difference?

“The opposition may be very small, but it is also very loud. It’s drowning out the voices of those in favor, which makes it feel like society is against marriage equality.”
the opposition反對派;反對黨in favor (of sth.)
Yu Mei-nu feels that the previous generation has an important role to play. “I encourage parents with children who are queer and already came out to speak up and show that love and acceptance resolves conflicts and heals wounds.”
the previous generation上一代acceptance(n.)
Yu believes wars are won with kindness, and that tolerance is key to winning this particular battle. Only then will the people in the dark corners finally be able to live a “normal” life. What she wants to see is a society with no pretense, people honest with themselves and with others and all living in peaceful tolerance.
