Peter and Tracy are eating at McDonald’s. They are chatting.
Peter: Quick question: Do you know where the tiniest McDonald’s is?
tiny(adj.)
Tracy: Where? Japan?
Peter: Nice guess, but it’s actually in Sweden. It’s just the size of a beehive.
size(n.)
Tracy: What?!
Peter: It’s for bees. Seeing that the wild bee population is facing a decline, McDonald’s Sweden built small beehives that look just like real McDonald’s restaurants to draw the public’s attention to the issue. They’re called “McHive.”
population(n.)人口、數量decline(n., v.)下滑draw attention to引起注意issue(n.)議題
Tracy: So cute!
Peter: Many crops rely on bees for pollination, but bees are easily affected by climate change. With these hives, wild bees can have a place to rest.
crop(n.)農作物rely on依靠=depend onpollination授粉affect(v.)
Tracy: And the crops can grow as well.
Peter: Yes, and it’s quite a fit for Sweden since Swedes are known for their awareness of environmental issues. Just think of Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old climate change activist; she’s also from Sweden.
Tracy: I know her! I’ve watched her speeches online. Very powerful!
speech(n.)演說powerful(adj.)
