Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a stern warning to Taiwan on Wednesday that Beijing will thwart any attempts at independence.
中國國家主席習近平週三對台灣提出嚴正警告，表示北京將阻止任何台獨的企圖。

Speaking at the opening of the 19th Communist Party Congress in Beijing, Xi said that China has “the resolve, the confidence, and the ability to defeat separatist attempts for Taiwan independence in any form.”
習近平在北京中共第十九次全國代表大會開幕式上發表演說，表示中國「有堅定的意志、信心和能力挫敗任何形式的台獨分裂圖謀。」

In response to Xi’s strong-worded speech, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said in a statement that it regretted that Xi’s talk again demonstrated Beijing’s “defensive and besieging attitude” towards Taiwan.
回應習近平措辭強烈的演說，陸委會發布新聞稿表示，習近平的演說再度展現出對台灣「防禦圍堵的態度」，對此感到遺憾。

The council urged Beijing to face the fact that it cannot win the hearts of the Taiwanese through its “one-China” principle and neither can “one country, two systems” gain the support of the people.

“Joint efforts should be made to explore a new model of interaction and to promote cross-strait communication,” the MAC said. “China’s obstruction and division have caused talks between the two sides to reach a deadlock.”
陸委會表示，兩岸應該共同尋求新的互動模式，促進兩岸溝通，並提到中國的阻礙遏制與分化對立，是讓兩岸溝通陷入僵局的原因。
