Line currently has around 21 million users in Taiwan, and 920 million messages are sent and more than 30 million calls are made via the app every day, according to the company.

Line Taiwan’s general manager Roger Chen said the company supports the FSC’s goal of promoting inclusive financing in the country through digital banking, and aims to provide clients access to useful and affordable financial products and services.

Chen said the vast number of Line users means the company would be able to reach more customers with its Web-only bank service.

Line will compete with Chunghwa Telecom Co and Japan-based Rakuten Inc to bid for the two licenses issued by the FSC to set up virtual banks in Taiwan.

Standard Chartered Bank Taiwan Ltd announced last Tuesday that it would invest NT$500 million (US$16.2 million) for a five percent stake in Line Bank.
