Mark is the general manager of an international food company. He is having a conversation with another manager, Ann.
Ann: What expectations or requirements do you have regarding your colleagues’ presentations?
expectation(n.)期待requirement(n.)要求regarding(prep.)和…有關=concerning=with regard to~
Mark: Direct and to the point! I hope everyone’s presentation is brief and to the point. Many of my colleagues like to drag along with their presentation. They talk for 5 minutes straight without getting to the point. For those of us working in an environment where every minute counts, this kind of presentation style is really irritating.
to the point切中要點的brief(adj.)簡短的irritating(adj.)
Ann: So does that mean that you just want to get the picture and that you want to get the information within one or two minutes?
get the picture了解大致情形
Mark: Exactly! So often I want my colleagues to imagine a situation: One day, you enter an elevator and your supervisor happens to be inside. Your supervisor knows that you are going to have a presentation next week, and would like to be briefed about it. As the elevator goes down, you start to run out of time. Now you only have 90 seconds, what do you do?
supervisor(n.)主管brief(v.)
Ann: Pushing every button on the elevator so that you can have more time?
Mark: You have a great sense of humor, but I’m afraid that’s not the best answer. What you need for such a limited time frame is a “top-down triangle narrative”: spend 10 seconds talking about the conclusion first and then 20 seconds on the bullet points. Then if you still have time, go back and flesh out the storyline.
sense of humor幽默感limited(adj.)
Ann: That’s a great tactic. It only takes 90 seconds to enlighten and impress your supervisor!
