As the world’s largest toy-maker, LEGO consumes about 5,000 metric tons of plastic a year on its packaging and 90,000 metric tons of plastic a year to make its pieces.

In order to reduce its environmental impact, the company has decided to package its products with recyclable paper starting next year and phase out single-use plastic bags by the end of 2025.

LEGO said that it has been developing recyclable paper bags for the past two years.

“We receive lots of letters from children asking why we still use single-use plastic in our boxes, which inspired us to begin to make this change,” said Tim Brooks, vice president of environmental responsibility at LEGO.

Brooks said that the eco-friendly bricks will be just as safe and durable as plastic ones, with the same colors as older bricks, while being easy enough for a child to click together and pull apart.
