The Legislature passed a bill that will allow citizens to participate in criminal trials and work in concert with professional judges to hand down verdicts, sending a strong message of President Tsai Ing-wen’s commitment to judicial reform.

Following a 36-hour review, the Citizen Judge Act cleared the legislative floor, providing the legal basis for a lay judge system for criminal offenses, and will come into force on January 1, 2023.

The act stipulates that citizen judges take part in the review of criminal cases carrying sentences of 10 years or more.
