專訪 台北市市長候選人李錫錕
Before he announced his return to politics, Lee Si-kuen, known as the “craziest professor at NTU”, was already popular on campus and online communities as a prominent scholar and a friendly face with a satirical streak.

He was so popular and easy to approach that many people came to him with questions such as: “how can I recover from a breakup?”, “how can I find myself?”, or even “why should we get an education?”.

Like an omniscient prophet, Lee always had a ready answer for all manner of questions.

Of course, Lee has his own opinion on those young people in Taiwan that are struggling to get by.

“The economy is in recession, the government isn’t helping. Just getting by is a great challenge for some people, and everyone is gradually giving up hope.”

“Competition is getting fiercer on both a national and corporate level, so the first thing that young people need to do is to cultivate their own skillsets, take time out for advanced training and learn from talented people in various fields. It’s the only way they can hope to pull themselves above the minimum wage,” he says.
他提到：「國家或企業之間的競爭變得猛烈，年輕人首先要提升自己的一技之長，擠出時間來進修，並以各行各業的傑出人才為學習對象，藉以擺脫低薪困境。」

“Fewer and fewer young people dare to take risks,” he explains. “What Taiwan lacks is a “daring” culture,” a term that Lee equates with being yourself and with a willingness to take risks.
李錫錕解釋：「年輕人越來越不敢冒險， 台灣現下缺乏了『狂』的文化。」 狂有兩個意思，一個是做自己，第二是冒險。

Lee, who has been teaching at NTU for nearly forty years, knows very well the strengths and weaknesses of the younger generation, yet he is reluctant to place the blame on them.

Lee has words of advice for today’s young people: “Better to die a daredevil than live as a coward.” He encourages them to pursue their dreams daringly and never be afraid to take risks.
