President Lai Ching-te addressed the Democratic Progressive Party’s national congress in Taipei on Sunday, July 21.

According to CNA News, the president used his speech to both set the theme of the conference — “democratic Taiwan moving forward in unity” — and propose three main targets for the DPP.
據中央社報導，賴清德總統在致詞中設定了大會的主題「守護台灣、民主團結」，也提出了民進黨的三大目標。

The first of these is for the party to establish a Taiwanese national identity.

Through doing this, Lai said that the country’s 23 million people could be united as a single community.

Building on this point, Lai added that it is the DPP’s responsibility to secure Taiwan’s sovereignty and oppose the country being annexed.

Lai’s second target for the party is to strengthen “the democratic constitutional system” in Taiwan.

This means the DPP needs to make efforts to protect the existing checks and balances among the five branches of government.

Without accomplishing this, Lai said that people’s rights would be harmed and reasonable party politics would not exist.

In further addressing the rights of citizens, Lai also stressed the DPP’s duty to advocate for lowering the voting age to 18 as well as for fighting to ensure free and fair elections.

Finally, Lai said that the DPP must aim to safeguard the human rights and freedoms of Taiwan’s citizens.

This includes protecting the freedom of speech, building trust in the judicial system, promoting equality and encouraging an open government “to make a stable and harmonious society.”
