In his inauguration speech, the new president directly addressed China, calling for an end to Chinese military threats against Taiwan and peace on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Lai went on to say that his government will neither give in to China nor do anything to cause cross-strait conflict.

Instead, he noted that he hopes Beijing will recognize his government as being “chosen by Taiwan’s people” and agree to enter peaceful talks with Taipei.

Moreover, Lai said that he believes both countries should work toward creating beneficial exchanges, especially in tourism and education, to promote the wellbeing of people in both Taiwan and China.

In addition, Lai took time in his speech to note some of his plans for improving the lives of Taiwanese people.
