Despite the controversial election process, National Taiwan University (NTU) professor Kuan Chung-ming took office as the university’s president at a ceremony on January 8th.

Kuan was actually elected as NTU president on Jan. 5th last year, and was originally scheduled to take office the following month.

But later, the Ministry of Education refused to appoint him due to an alleged conflict of interest. Kuan served on Taiwan Mobile’s board of directors while the company’s vice president Richard Tsai sat on the university’s election committee.

After two ministers of education stepped down over the controversy, the new minister, Yeh Jiun-rong, approved Kuan’s appointment on December 24th last year.
