Kazuo Ueda Nominated for Governor of Bank of Japan
Kazuo Ueda has been nominated by Japan’s government to succeed the current governor of the country’s central bank Haruhiko Kuroda.
succeed (v.)
If approved by parliament, Ueda would be the first academic economist to lead the Bank of Japan in the post-World War II era — he currently serves as a professor and dean at Kyoritsu Women’s University in Tokyo.
approve (v.)
For many, Ueda’s nomination came as a surprise because “he lacks the typical background of a BOJ governor.”
come as a surprise 令人感到驚訝come as no surprise 不令人感到訝異lack (v.)
Traditionally, the position is filled by a bureaucrat or someone with extensive experience working in the Finance Ministry or central bank.
bureaucrat (n.)
Despite previously serving on the BOJ’s policy board from 1998 to 2005, Ueda has spent much of his time teaching in universities both in Japan and abroad.
board (n.)
To some economists, though, Ueda’s nontraditional career path could be a benefit to the position, as he would enter the job under the pressure of needing to address Kuroda’s “decade-long experiment with ultra-easy money and rock-bottom interest rates.”
address (v.)
Due to his neutral stance as “an orthodox academic economist,” Ueda’s lack of bias toward any one single economic policy could give him an advantage while working to right the ship of Japan’s monetary approach.
neutral (adj.)中立的a neutral country 中立國orthodox (adj.)正統的、主流的right the ship 修正走向、導正情勢monetary (adj.)
Regardless of Ueda’s approval, whoever takes the reins of the BOJ will “have to at some point move away from actively seeking higher inflation and containing the rise of interest rates.”
take the reins 掌管contain (v.)
This will require a gradual, smooth process that many believe will not be easy.
Even though some experts agree that Ueda is fit to lead through these changes, the ultimate decision rests on parliament as to whether he will usher in a new era of leadership at the BOJ.
