Japan’s yen is on the rebound from its lowest value against the US dollar since 1990.
This 32-year low was mainly the result of expectations that the US Federal Reserve would be continuing its aggressive raises in interest rates to battle inflation.
combat(v.)對抗
Since that time, though, the yen has seen over a 13% increase in value.
Domestically, the Bank of Japan’s ultra-loose monetary policies were to blame for the yen’s low performance earlier this year.
However, Japan’s government has been working to stabilize its currency by deploying 9 trillion yen, the equivalent of around US$64 billion, since September.
stable(adj.)穩定的stabilize(v.)(使)穩定stability(n.)穩定性deploy(v.)
Combined with a mid-November report showing a drop in US inflation and, consequently, a potential for slowdowns of interest rate hikes, the yen’s value has gotten a big boost.
Additionally, many foreign exchange analysts have been seeing different dynamics as the yen is making its recovery.
dynamics(n.)動力、動向dynamic(adj.)
As opposed to the times of volatility this fall, short-term bets on yen by global investors have been reduced, showing that Japan’s currency has gained more stability in the FX market.
volatility(n.)波動(性)volatile(adj.)
According to analysts at JPMorgan, one of the more notable aspects of this situation is that “Japanese institutional investors including life insurers and banks are heavy participants in the yen’s recent surge.”
surge(n.)
With the dollar-yen pair remaining relatively stable in both London’s and New York’s recent trading sessions, along with heavy trading of the pair over the past week’s Tokyo sessions, larger gains may be in store for Japan’s yen if investors and the corporate sector start increasing “fresh currency hedges against yen strength,” while divesting foreign assets.
