Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe raised the issue of the recent protests in Hong Kong over a proposed extradition law with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The discussion took place during a meeting in Osaka on June 27, on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G-20) Summit.

Abe, at an evening meeting ahead of the G-20 summit, highlighted the importance of maintaining a free, open and prosperous Hong Kong under the “one country, two systems” framework. His comments were made in light of recent disputes in Hong Kong over a controversial extradition bill.

Abe’s remarks came in spite of Beijing’s firm warning earlier in the week that it would not allow the Hong Kong protests to be brought up during the summit.
