日方承認ATP問題
The Japanese manufacturer of a train that crashed in Taiwan last month said it has discovered a design flaw in the train.
上月在台灣發生事故的普悠瑪列車日本製造商稱，普悠瑪的設計有瑕疵。
Nippon Sharyo, a subsidiary of the Central Japan Railway Co., said last Thursday that the company had found a flaw in the design for all 19 Puyuma trains that it sold to the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA).
東海旅客鐵道株式會社的子公司「日本車輛製造株式會社」上週四表示，該公司發現賣給台鐵的19輛普悠瑪火車都有一項設計缺陷。

The company revealed that the connection of the automatic train protection (ATP) safety system, which automatically applies the brakes when the train exceeds the speed limit, was not wired to the command center.

As a result, train dispatchers could not be alerted that the ATP had been switched off.

A Nippon Sharyo official said there was no problem with the safety system itself and that the wiring issue would not undermine train safety.

It remains to be confirmed whether the flaw was a direct cause of the deadly crash in Yilan that left 18 people dead and 187 injured on Oct. 21.

According to Nippon Sharyo, before the trains were delivered to the TRA, they were carefully examined for compliance with the specifications.

However, the Japanese manufacturer could not check if the ATP was properly connected to the command center. The inspection should have been carried out by the TRA after the delivery.

The Japanese company said if the TRA asks, it will conduct maintenance for the Puyuma trains and fix the problem.
