Japan Records Largest-Ever Trade Deficit in 2022
Japan’s annual trade deficit soared to 19.97 trillion yen (US$155.27 billion) in 2022 as a direct result of higher energy and raw material costs combined with the depreciation of the yen.

According to recently released government data, this deficit is the largest ever recorded—surpassing 2014’s previous high of 12.82 trillion yen.
surpass (v.)
Despite Japan’s record-high exports of 98.19 trillion yen in 2022, which grew 18.2% due to increased shipments of cars and steel, the overall value of imports also hit a record high of 118.16 trillion yen.
despite (prep.)儘管shipment (n.)
This 39.2% jump has mainly been attributed to rising fuel costs.

In fact, both sides of this equation were affected by the war in Ukraine as “Japan joined Western nations in imposing economic sanctions on Russia,” resulting in a 29.8% decrease in exports to Russia, while the ongoing war increased the costs of energy and raw material which contributed to the high value of Japan’s imports.

The depreciation of the yen, which fell to its lowest value against the US dollar in over 30 years, also compounded Japan’s economic situation.

compound (v.)
In 2022, the exchange rate averaged 130.77 yen per US dollar, showing a 19.5% increase over 2021’s rate.
While this did inflate the value of Japan’s exports, it also led to higher prices for imports paid by Japanese buyers.
inflate (v.)
Although slow growth is predicted for the global economy in 2023, some economists expect that “commodity prices will return to pre-pandemic levels,” which could offer a reprieve for Japan’s economy.
commodity (n.)
However, 2022’s massive trade deficit underscores Japan’s inherent vulnerability as a resource-scarce country that is reliant on imports to meet domestic needs.
