Taiwan is preparing to bar iQiyi and Tencent’s WeTV, two of China’s most popular streaming services, from operating in the country next month in order to close regulatory loopholes that allowed them to offer local versions of their services through partnerships.

The move has been followed by an announcement last week that Taiwanese individuals and companies will be banned from partnering with Chinese streaming operators and distributing their content.

In response to the new ruling, Tencent has declined to comment, while iQiyi argued that the company should “not become the specific target of legislation,” saying it wished to see that the Taiwanese government “recognizes the benefits of an open market economy.”
