The world’s leading climate scientists are calling for urgent actions to keep global warming to a maximum of 1.5C, warning that the goals stated by governments in the Paris Agreement of 2015 are no longer enough to reach that goal.

According to the latest report released by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the earth is currently warming at 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade, and at this rate, global warming will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2030 and 3 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

The report warns that if global warming reaches 2C above pre-industrial levels, then corals will be eradicated, the Arctic will be completely devoid of ice during summer at least once a decade, and animals and plants will face extinction with the shrinking of their habitats.

The researchers behind the report say the terms agreed in the Paris accord are no longer sufficient to limit climate change and they call for “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes” to keep global warming below the 1.5C target.
