Intel Corp. struck a deal with smartphone chip designer MediaTek Inc. on July 25 to start manufacturing the Taiwanese company’s semiconductors at their own US foundry.

Prior to the announcement, Intel had mainly produced chips that it designed itself, but new Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger made it his priority to revive the company’s foundry business last year.

The deal brings much optimism to the company, with MediaTek being one of the biggest suppliers of smartphone processors.

Intel Foundry Services will manufacture multiple chips for a range of smart edge devices, the two companies announced on Monday.

“The agreement is designed to help MediaTek build a more balanced, resilient supply chain through the addition of a new foundry partner with significant capacity in the United States and Europe,” Intel said in a press release.

Analysts see the move as Intel’s attempt to claw its way back to a leading position in the industry, a status the company held until it was toppled by current semiconductor leaders TSMC and Samsung.

The CHIPS Act that President Biden has been pushing would open a budget of $52 billion to support fabs in the US.

The act would help significantly reduce the gargantuan cost of establishing a new fab, with Intel already investing over $20 billion for its Ohio manufacturing site.

Still, TechInsights argues that Intel will continue to trail behind TSMC and Samsung, both in production scale and technological progress.
